Microdosing magic mushrooms & snorkeling with sea turtles in Tulum

sea turtle underwater

Tulum, Mexico is a very magical place to take a vacation.

I have so many amazing memories from various travels in Mexico.

One of the memories that stands out the most was when I took magic mushrooms and then went snorkeling with the sea turtles.

God, it was AMAZING.

I saw sea turtles, a stingray and I had these little blue and yellow fish come up to me and they were kissing my arms.

This was a bucket list experience to say the least.

Disclaimer: This is the type of experience that you take full responsibility for doing and you take any necessary precautions that you feel are needed.

I’m also not telling you to fly through airport customs with plant medicine. I am simply sharing my personal experiences.

And what I AM telling you is – I would do it 1,000 times over 😉

Now, let’s dive into the juice of the magical excursion.

——

Mexico is the land of liberation, it’s a place where anything goes and you don’t have a feeling of being held back by silly little red tape rules.

*I say “silly little red tape rules” in a Sir Richard Branson voice. IYKYK.*

I always have the most fun stories when I return from a trip to Mexico.

Anyways, this gorgeous memory was made when I went on a 10-day wellness getaway to Tulum.

I had always had this dream to take magic mushrooms (psilocybin) and then go snorkeling with sea turtles.

And honestly I didn’t even know the opportunity was going to present itself on this vacation.

But it just so happened that I took shrooms with me from LA to Mexico, and then I randomly booked a snorkeling trip on my last day in Tulum and I was like well f*ck it, why not – let’s make this dream happen hahaha.

So, I took the mushrooms (psilocybin powder) in water in my hotel room.

——

It was definitely more than a microdose (prob around 0.6-0.7 gm psilocybin) but also obviously wasn’t like a hardcore trip; if/when you do this use common sense lol.

I had already been microdosing on and off for a few weeks in LA, so I knew my tolerance and experience with the psilocybin.

——

Then I ordered my cab to Akumal. Akumal is about a 40-min drive north of Tulum.

And it’s where Akumal Dive Center is.

Akumal Dive Center is a really amazing place to take a snorkeling tour in Mexico. Everything is included – the flippers, snorkel, all the gear – and they take you out in this little boat. You get out into the water at various spots and go snorkeling & exploring the underwater nature scene.

The cab ride was the perfect duration for the microdosed plant medicine to work its magic.

Now, if you’ve never done magic mushrooms then you may be thinking “wtf you were hallucinating while snorkeling – how is that even safe?”

So, I’ll just clear up any confusion.

Microdosing is the most incredible experience because you are giving your body micro amounts of the medicine and it amplifies the magic of life without sending you catapulting into another dimension.

Microdosing psilocybin I particularly like when I am going to be nature, ESPECIALLY in or near the ocean.

Everything is more vibrant, the colors are brighter, you feel more serene, your joy is amplified, your vision sees things in a more creative way and you hear the waves crashing at an even more magnetic frequency.

In addition, any stress, apprehension, tension and fear has left your body – you are so in the moment, so grateful for every minute of this life and you’re just BEING, just EXPERIENCING; you are LIVING life to it’s core.

So, it’s not like I was hallucinating while snorkeling, but life was definitely amplified with sensation and I was experiencing the underwater world with a more creative lens.

For my fellow microdosing friends, you get it. If you’re new to microdosing, this type of experience is a MUST-try.

So back to my experience in Mexico specifically.

We put on our snorkeling gear, and then headed out into the water to begin our expedition. The boat takes us out, a group of about 5-6 tourists.

Then, when the boat stops, we hop out into the water and start snorkeling. Face underwater, up close with the coral and I look to my right and I see an absolutely stunning sea turtle.

I have never felt more present than I did at that very moment. It was like the whole world stopped and it was just me underwater with the sea turtles. I actually couldn’t believe that I was living out this vision in real life.

Because a few days before I was at a healer’s sanctuary in Tulum on her table doing holotropic breathwork and suddenly sea turtles came circling around me in a visionary dream.

So, to now be physically swimming beside them was truly a pinch-me moment; breathtaking, unforgettable and exquisite.

We swam around the region of the ocean exploring for some more time and then we were summoned back to the boat by our tour guides.

Once our tour group was back on the boat, we then sailed over to another part of the ocean and we got back into the water. This time, I come up close and personal with a stingray.

Now, I must admit, at this moment it was majestic, glorious but also a little fear-inspiring. Because the first thing that went through my mind  was “omg Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray”. LOL.

I just allowed myself to regain my tranquility and remind myself that the stingray is not a predator but it is simply a creature of the sea and I am in it’s natural habitat. So, I let go of that initial fear, and honed in on the beauty and glory of being able to be that close to a stingray.

The dear creature just gently did it’s thing and kept on swimming along the bottom of the sand while we continued to be in awe of its beauty.

As the stingray moved onwards and away, next thing I am graced with is the most beautiful blue and yellow fish dancing with my arms.

They came right up to me and they started kissing my arms so gently, so delicately. And I was so still and just gently bobbed in the ocean while we spent time with each other (the fish and I). I LOVED that moment, it was so breathtaking and magical I nearly started to cry.

I felt so at peace, my heart felt so open and full and I felt so appreciative of the opportunity to be in the ocean, swimming with tropical looking fish and seeing the underwater world thru such a beautiful lens.

It felt like the globe had stopped spinning and I was in a different timeline of life.

At that moment, we started getting called back to the boat so that we could head back ashore to finish our snorkeling tour.

As I’m writing this article 2 years after this experience, I am still getting teary-eyed as I remember just how breathtaking and beautiful of an experience it was.

I will never forget the tranquility that I felt as the blue and yellow fish sweetly kissed my arms in the ocean of Mexico.

As we got back to shore, we stripped down from our snorkeling gear and then were guided to the outdoor showers that were right near the jungle trees.

Showering in the jungle with a view of the ocean after just dancing underwater with sea animals, THIS was truly one for the books.

As I enjoyed every moment of the pure water running over my body and cleaning the sand and saltwater from my toes, I l looked up into the sky and thanked God for this moment, this exquisite dance with desire that had manifested into my physical reality.

And that was a wrap! This was the finale on that unforgettable Tulum trip and it was the BEST way to end the trip with bliss, nature and serenity.

I graciously thanked my tour guides and the dive center staff and then wandered out into the center of Akumal where I found a little stall selling fresh coconuts to drink the water.

I immediately ordered one from the man and then toddled into a souvenir shop across the way.

At that shop, I found the perfect souvenir.

A tan colored coin purse that had a sea turtle on it with “Akumal, Mexico” written in a cursive font.

With coin purse and coconut in hand, I was ready to head back to my hotel to pack my suitcase and head to the Cancun airport.

On my ride back to the hotel, I joyfully reminisced on all that I had just experienced and my whole body felt grounded in gratitude with a deep sense of joy and pleasure.

It was then time for me to return to LA and so I boarded my plane at the Cancun airport, smiled as I thought about my morning and it was wheels up to the City of Angels.
